Abstract

Objective: to identify from the perception of health workers the role and relevance of Primary Health Care for the production of care. Methodology: qualitative study outlined by narrative interview, developed with 17 workers from a Primary Health Care unit in the city of Rio de Janeiro, whose analysis was outlined by the Atlas Ti® software. Results: the findings indicate that the perception of health workers about the role and relevance of Primary Health Care is based on having it as the gateway and care coordinator, being a point for promoting health care, having ability to absorb different types of demands and have comprehensive actions and services, which contribute to the completeness and resolution of health care. Conclusion: it is necessary to strengthen the understanding of health workers about the role of Primary Health Care in the Health Care Network, its importance for the production of care and improvement of people's quality of life.
