Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the trend of hospitalizations for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) between the years 2013 and 2021 in southern Brazil, investigating the consequences of the pandemic in the hospital network. This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study, which used public data obtained by DataSUS from the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, which were later systematized and tabulated with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 22.0. The results show that Rio Grande do Sul was the state with the highest rate of hospitalizations for SARS due to COVID-19 (85.4%), the need to use non-invasive (63.4%) and invasive (23.2) ventilatory support %), and a higher number of deaths (34.3%). However, the state of Paraná had higher rates of ICU admissions (32.5%). Regarding the average length of stay (in days), the state of Rio Grande do Sul had higher numbers (9.93 ± 8.44). It is possible to conclude that the pandemic showed even more the weaknesses of the hospital network resulting from the management models and underfunding present in the public health system, providing relevant information on the evolution and outcome of serious cases of COVID-19.
